Autor: Kalyna de Almeida Alves Saborido, Tárcila

Date of document: December 22-2021

Abstract:Neglected diseases are found in the most vulnerable population, with poor infrastructure conditions, lack of basic sanitation, which are associated with poor socioeconomic conditions. Geo-helminthiasis is considered an endemic disease in several municipalities, being Agrestina, one of them. It is known that the group with the highest risk for developing such infections due to this condition is made up of children, due to the fact that many of them do not perform essential personal hygiene measures, such as washing their hands, exposing themselves to the soil that it is a relevant source of contamination and that the teacher is a fundamental actor. The objective of this research is to identify the pedagogical strategies of teachers from the municipal network of Agrestina-PE who work in elementary school with regard to neglected diseases. This is an exploratory and descriptive research in which part of a questionnaire prepared by Augusto (2016) was applied. The results indicated that a large part of them know the disease and demonstrate knowledge about the signs of worms: 41% of teachers knew about neglected diseases and the others had some understanding. Regarding the determinants, 63.8% recognize that neglected diseases are determined by socioeconomic factors and 71% believe that students are exposed to some type of disease on their daily journey from home to school. Everyone understands that health education is an important factor for the prevention of these diseases, and 38% of them affirm that teachers can carry out educational activities on neglected diseases, as long as they are trained to better develop the topics covered. Most teachers (55%) said that they do not carry out health education activities even though they recognize the importance of information and disease prevention in their students, being a challenge for management to intervene on this fact. The results demonstrate the need to integrate the health and education sectors with trained professionals, security to work on the topic in order to contribute through pedagogical strategies to favor knowledge information not only for students, but for the family and community in which it is inserted the school.
