Abstract:

Learning strategies can be seen as mental processes used to carry out an activity, which facilitate study and consequent improvement in school performance. Learning should take place through methods capable of promoting student initiative and responsibility in their own learning. Research suggests that good school performance involves the efficient use of learning strategies and the control of student psychological variables. Given the above, this study aims to describethe strategies used by 5th grade students and teachers and analyze whetherthese strategies promote meaningful learning. A descriptive study based on field research was proposed. As for the data approach, the research was configured as a qualitative and quantitative study characterized as action research at the Municipal School Professora Maria das Dores Cavalcante Albuquerque located in the municipality of Ipojuca, state of Pernambuco. Through a semi-structured questionnaire, the pedagogical practices of 04 teachers from the 5th year classes and the learning methods used by 144 students from the six 5th year classes of the referred school were investigated. Of the total of 144 students investigated, 65% highlighted that their teachers teach different classes and 92% admit that more attractive classes facilitate learning. 96% say that their teachers contextualize their classes and always investigate their prior knowledge. 23% of students refer to group work as the strategy that most facilitates learning. Regarding the strategies adopted by the students, 13% study based on the book, 19% develop group work and 13% emphasize problem solving as a strategy used. Of the total number of students, 44% say they pay attention to the explanations and study the contents daily so as not to accumulate. Regarding the teachers, they point out that active methodologies can help students to be more reflective in choosing strategies that facilitate their learning process. The study concluded that learning strategies act as learning reinforcers as they provide students with tools to diversify their ways of studying and learning, promoting self-assessment attitudes and improving school performance. The use of learning strategies, in addition to equipping the student for the moment of study, also allows him to plan, monitor and regulate his study so that learning is enhanced.
