Abstract: Public health is a vast and complex field dedicated to the well-being of the general population. It plays a crucial role in promoting prevention strategies, providing accessible and quality healthcare services, and conducting research to enhance treatment and overall quality of life for society. Within the context of HIV, which attacks the body’s immune system, caring for and treating individuals with HIV presents challenging areas within public health. Despite significant medical advancements that have transformed HIV into a manageable chronic condition, there remain several obstacles to overcome, including social stigma, discrimination, and barriers to healthcare access. Improving care for people living with HIV/AIDS is of paramount importance. As a general objective, this study aims to understand the perceptions of people living with HIV/AIDS in Brazil regarding the reception provided by professionals in the Unified Health System (SUS), in accordance with the principles outlined in Laws 8080 and 12.984. The methodology involved an exploratory study with a qualitative approach conducted from November 2023 to January 2024. Data collection was carried out through surveys distributed on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and X. The data analysis utilized an electronic questionnaire developed on Google Forms, consisting of 24 objective questions and one open-ended (dissertative) question. The survey was divided into two parts: sociodemographic and economic questions in the first part, and specific questions related to the PHIV/AIDS population in the second part. The results indicated that dentists were more hesitant to treat these individuals compared to physicians or other healthcare professionals, leading to the implementation of additional biosafety measures when caring for them. Fear of HIV-positive status exposure leads individuals to avoid seeking information about their health status, often resulting in silence regarding their diagnosis. This reluctance complicates access to available treatments within healthcare networks. However, several studies have reported that healthcare professionals discriminate against people living with HIV/AIDS. This discrimination arises from various factors, including limited knowledge about HIV transmission, associating the disease with behaviors deemed inappropriate or immoral, existing stigma, and a lack of awareness about its consequences. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has significantly impacted institutional practices and healthcare professionals, leading to disparities in healthcare service distribution. The study found that most respondents reported experiencing discrimination when accessing care, particularly in the public sector, primary care, and secondary care settings, by both physicians and psychologists. Additionally, the care provided often did not meet the requirements outlined in Laws 8080 and 12.984. Encouraging further research related to educational programs and enhancing the dissemination and analysis of existing programs is crucial to promoting greater awareness among healthcare professionals nationwide regarding appropriate and compassionate approaches to treating patients with HIV/AIDS.
