Abstract: This present work sought to make an analysis about the history of the Brazilian public school, using as model the Santo Antônio State School in the city of Piancó – PB. For that, a historical rescue was made of the emergence of the Brazilian public school, challenges and perspectives. The emergence of the Public School in Brazil has incalculable importance for society as a whole, because in addition to developing the labor skills for which it was created, it provides in the present day through its readaptations and updates many other aspects in the lives of those who seek personal and professional improvement. The emergence of the public school took place in a decontextualized way, in a period of many transitions, and along with that, a series of questions grow: how to prepare skilled labor? What conceptions develop when thinking about the emergence of the Public School in Brazil? How can we reflect the types of qualifications offered to workers? What are the conceptions and practices that guide the public school in Brazil? This bias served as the basis of this research the social, political and economic determinants. As a general objective, we sought to develop a reflection on the public school, its origin and changes in Brazil and in the Brazilian reality. Specifically: narrate the emergence of the Brazilian public school; demonstrate who served and who should serve the Brazilian public school; show the evolution of the public school over time and, finally, consider the importance of the public school in today’s society. For the collection of data, the bibliographic research was used through official publication documents and exposed on the public domain site, bibliographies that deal with the subject matter on the screen. An interview was held in the same context with former students of the Santo Antônio State School, who studied in the period in which this school still belonged to the coordination of their religious origin, was a college of religious administration. It is necessary to know with more comprehensiveness, breadth and understanding what contribution the public school has to society.
