Abstract:This research seeks to examine the intersection between school education and sustainability, recognizing the crucial importance of this relationship in the formation of conscious citizens. Therefore, this study adopts a mixed research approach, including literature review and field research in elementary schools II in the municipal network of the municipality of Maragogi, located in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. Therefore, this study investigates the effective integration of sustainability principles and aims to implement sustainable practices in the school context. With the research it was possible to understand the importance of working to raise awareness and promote innovative sustainable practices for the environment, knowing that it requires daily care to provide quality of life for everyone. It was also notable that not everyone involved in the school body was aware of their responsibilities with this topic, therefore, the actions contributed to sensitizing teachers and students regarding relevant changes in ecosystem care, thus offering practical insights into the necessary changes. The thesis is divided into two parts, one being the bibliographical review with several theoretical ureferences that make up the development that is contextualized with the following topics: Introduction to sustainability; Sustainability: concepts and practices; Environmental education at school level; Environmental education in the educational context of Brazil; Brazilian legislation and environmental education; Formal and informal environmental education; Inclusion and diversity in sustainable education; Sustainable education and health: a real connection; Role of the local community in integrating sustainability into schools: involvement and partnerships and How environmental education is developed in municipal schools in Maragogi/AL: experience report. And the second part, which is field research with data collected through practice with a questionnaire with school employees and a “Guardians of the Environment” project carried out with students from the municipal network of the municipality already mentioned here. Finally, it is also notable that through this study, it was possible to make a significant contribution to the understanding of how school education can play a vital role in promoting sustainability, thus recognizing that teachings relating to the topic can begin the school context, but move on to an extramural practice that will have significant future effects. Practice in the field reveals the students’ desire to continue working with issues relating to the environment discussed in the project and, as a result, they claim to recognize the importance of this subject in the school environment. In this way, the relevance of research for the development of the ecosystem in the municipality is noticeable
