Abstract: Learning takes place continuously, so teachers need to conduct knowledge in a meaningful way, so as to provide action-reflection-action in the learners and in the educators themselves. Evaluation is understood as a pedagogical action that requires acts of planning and execution. However, often the evaluation is used as a statistical means to obtain data, classifying the student as good or bad. In thisperspective, the present study had as general objective: to analyze the process of learning and evaluation of the students of the 5th year of the initial years of Elementary School in the municipality of São José de Caiana – PB. To achieve this objective, the following specific objectives were highlighted: a survey of the IDEB and SOMA indexes, from 2013 to 2017; compare and analyze the results of the IDEB between 2013 and 2017; to ascertain the strategies that the municipality develops to improve student learning. For that, a questionnaire was applied with teachers who work in the 5 th grade years of the initial years of Elementary School in the municipality of São José de Caiana – PB. The research was, methodologically, bibliographical and field, with studies of authors who discuss the subject and the data collection through the application of questionnaire with questions semiestruturas (open and closed questions) made with teachers that work with the classes of 5th year of the Fundamental In-kind. The research had the theoretical support of authors such as: DEMO (1995); FREIRE (2008); GADOTTI (2007); LIBANEO (2013); LUCKESI (2000,2011), GIL (2008), among others, who discuss aspects related to theprocess of teaching a-trapping and evaluation. Starting from the analysis of the data, we also discussed the teachers’ profile, their understanding of the challenges, changes and actions developed for the improvement of the teaching process of students, using as reference the IDEB and SOMA indexes of the municipality of São José de Caiana. In conclusion, the municipality develops significant actions that enable teachers and students to improve the teaching-learning process, which consequently improves the IDEB and SOMA indexes.
