Abstract: Emergency remote teaching, adopted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, brought numerous challenges to the teaching of mathematics, especially in the 9th year of elementary school in public schools. This study aims to analyze the difficulties faced by students and teachers at a public school in Luziânia, Goiás, during the implementation of this teaching format. The methodology chosen for the study was a qualitative approach, with the aim of deepening the understanding of the phenomena covered and exploring their complexities. This method allowed for a detailed and interpretative analysis, highlighting the richness and depth of the information obtained throughout the study, offering a broader understanding of the challenges of teaching mathematics in the context of emergency remote teaching. Among the main challenges, the lack of adequate access to technology, the difficulty in maintaining student engagement and the complexity of teaching mathematical content effectively in a virtual environment stand out. Furthermore, the lack of face-to-face interaction and the lack of pedagogical resources adapted to remote teaching limited the learning process. The study also investigates how teachers sought to adapt their methodologies and which strategies were most effective in minimizing negative impacts, considering the specificities of mathematics teaching.
